Piano Music by Robert Helps

Eventually The Carousel Begins (1987) [for 2 pianos]

With this work, we enter a new era in Helps‘ music in which his titles explicitly refer to the mythic quality of certain memories. The piece is a diptych: a glacial introduction creates an ambience of tense expectation; eventually "the carousel" itself revolves eerily in rigid rhythms, dissolves into fiorature, and returns to the “memory” frame of the introduction.

Duration: 10 minutes

Eventually the Carousel Begins was commissioned by and is dedicated to N. & L. Mastrogiacomo.

Mythic, mechanical nostalgia: Eventually the Carousel Begins, bars 64-67
